All your databases.
In an app that's actually light.
Octapus DB is a desktop client for PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis and SQLite. It opens in under half a second, takes a few MB, and doesn't weigh you down like an IDE.

Performance
Light isn't a slogan. It's a measurement.
Rust at the core and the system's own webview instead of a bundled Chromium. The result is an app that opens before you finish clicking.

How we measured
Apple M3 Pro with 18 GB, macOS 26.1, on October 24, 2026.
Time to window: from the open command until the first window of at least 600 × 400 pt is on screen (splash screens don't count). One warm-up launch discarded, then the median of the next 5.
Memory: the app open and idle for 15 s, with no connection; the sum of the physical footprint (Activity Monitor's Memory column) of every process of the app, including the WebKit ones it draws its interface with.
Size: the .app bundle on disk. Installers: the files of version 1.1.0-beta.2 on GitHub.
Autocomplete: the app's own benchmark suite, on a PostgreSQL with 5,002 schemas and 750,154 tables.
The script lives in the site's repository — run it and compare on your machine.
Ask in plain English. Octapus writes the query.
We're building an assistant into Octapus. It will read the structure of the open database, write the query in its language, check it, run it and show the result in the grid — and if the database answers with an error, fix the query on its own.
The assistant isn't in the app yet. Below is a preview of how it will work.
- Will speak each database's languageSQL on PostgreSQL and SQLite, filters and aggregations on MongoDB, commands on Redis.
- The query, always in viewYou'll see what ran and every assumption it made. One click opens it in the editor.
- Only reads run on their ownWrites, functions and indexes will come back as text for you to review. Auto-run can be turned off.
- Your data stays on your machineThe model only gets names and types. Values in views and functions become ? and errors are scrubbed before leaving.
How you'll use it
When it lands, you pick the provider in settings. Credentials will live in Octapus's vault, encrypted on your machine.
ChatGPT
Sign in with your Plus or Pro account and use your plan — no API key.
OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter
Paste your key and pay the provider directly.
Ollama, LM Studio
The model runs on your computer. Not a byte leaves your network.
OpenAI-compatible
Any gateway or server that speaks the OpenAI API.
See what will be sent to the model
The structure goes as compact DDL, only for the tables that matter to the question. No row of your database is sent.

Security
Your data stays with you
No account, no telemetry, and the source is open for anyone who wants to check.
In the app
- Passwords in an AES-256-GCM vault, with the key bound to your device
- No account and no telemetry: Octapus doesn't know who you are
- Open source under MIT and Apache-2.0
- Updates are signed and verified before installing
- Nothing reaches the database until you review it — and what you save goes in one transaction: all or nothing
In the assistant (coming soon)
- You'll pick the provider — or run the model on your own machine
- Only the structure will be sent; values become ? and errors are scrubbed
- Reads through per-language guards, a READ ONLY transaction and a time limit
- Names and comments from your database treated as data, never as instructions

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is Octapus really free?
Yes. It's free and open source (MIT or Apache-2.0), with no hidden paid tier and no connection limit.
Why does macOS need a command to install it?
The app isn't signed by Apple yet. With Homebrew, the last command removes the quarantine macOS puts on downloaded apps. The source is open for you to check.
Where are my passwords stored?
In Octapus's own vault, encrypted with AES-256-GCM and with the key bound to your device. They never leave your machine.
When is the assistant coming?
There's no date yet: it's in development and will arrive in an app update. When it does, you'll be able to use your ChatGPT plan, your own API key — paying the provider directly — or a local model, for free.
Will the AI see my data?
No. The model will only get the structure: table names, columns and types. No row of your database will be sent, and error messages will be scrubbed before leaving.
Does it work offline?
Yes: the app connects straight to your databases, through no server of ours. When the assistant arrives, it will need its provider — unless you use a local model.
Does Octapus collect usage data?
No. There's no account, telemetry or analytics inside the app.
